Wink’s Body Shop in Ithaca knows that one of the joys of living in Ithaca is being so close to Cayuga Lake. Many local Ithacans love going to the local parks and sitting by the lake while enjoying a picnic. Kids are often seen frolicking about with the lake as a backdrop to their play. People that love boating look forward to the return of warm weather so they can once again spend some quality time on lake waters.
There’s another way to enjoy Cayuga Lake that is often overlooked. Whenever you’re in the mood for a nice, scenic drive, take off for a drive around Cayuga Lake. Now that spring is here once again, it’s time to plan the ultimate Finger Lakes driving experience. You probably already know that Cayuga Lake is a prominent body of water, but did you know that it’s also the longest of the lakes in this region?
Yep. And, its length makes for some mighty fine driving. Because Wink’s Ithaca Body Shop is a fan of scenic driving, we highly recommend experiencing the lake behind the wheel. The best route to take to get the most from your scenic drive is NY-89. Head north on NY-89 towards Taughannock State Park, and stop there to check out the amazing waterfall that’s at the top of the trail. Water tumbles down a rocky gorge, dropping 215-feet to the swirling whirlpool below.
Continue heading north on route 89 and admire the lake as you drive into the heart of wine country. Here you’ll find lots of trees interspersed with homes, farms and wineries. The Cayuga Wine Trail features over 30 wineries, and you can stop at one, or several, along your journey. The wine trail offers visitors the opportunity to taste a wide variety of wines, some from award-winning vintages. We highly recommend buying a few bottles to take back home.
As you continue on, you’ll be faced with a choice of taking a detour on NY-96 north, which leads to NY-227 West. This is how you drive into the Finger Lakes National Forest, which sits between Cayuga and Seneca lakes. The forest is a land of enchantment that has hiking trails, streams, gorges and ponds. Of course, you could spend a whole day enjoying this magnificent forest and be completely satisfied.
If you aren’t in the mood for forest site seeing, stick to NY-89, heading north, and it will take you to Cayuga Lake State Park, where you’ll be able to enjoy a sandy beach, a bit of swimming, or fishing, if you prefer. Or, continue driving until you reach the Montezuma Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is home to over 200 species of migratory birds. Turn back, or continue driving to Seneca Falls.
This is just one possible route you can take when driving around Cayuga Lake. Before your trip, we’d be remiss if we didn’t remind you to get your car checked out at the best Ithaca collision repair shop in town – Wink’s Body Shop.Tags: collision repair in Ithaca, Ithaca Body Shop
