Now that the chill of winter 2019 is finally behind us it’s time to check out your vehicle for signs of erosion, wear and rust. It’s not uncommon for cars, trucks or SUVs to get beat up by Tompkins County snow, ice and harsh driving conditions. Not only does the weather take its toll, but human drivers do as well. A minor fender bender in the front or rear of your car typically stays there forever, unless you take action to fix it. Even small dings on your car’s surface gradually grow more visible as the paint continues chipping off, and the rust sets in.

Instead of not doing anything about it, and waiting for more dings and dents to occur, you can take care of this problem before it becomes a larger issue. Our customers love the work that Wink’s does as their hometown collision repair experts.
When your vehicle is damaged due to a collision of some sort you can’t just wish the problems away, but you can take it to experts who know exactly how to deal with the internal and external auto body damage. Although, you may not be ready for it,Winter weather is here. We have all been through it before, ice and driving snow will visit the area, blanketing roads with a thin layer of snow and ice just in time for your morning commute. If you’re a long-time resident of Ithaca, you are probably somewhat resigned to the inevitability of cold nights. If you’re new in town, you’ll quickly get used to them. Either way, cold nights often lead to slippery morning driving conditions and slippery driving conditions lead to fender benders, if you are involved in a fender bender give Winks Body Shop, a local Ithaca body shop a call.
Oh Those Hills
Driving in Ithaca during colder weather presents local drivers with a unique challenge because of the city’s hilly terrain. Now, you may be lucky enough to not have to drive up and down the main hills too often, but lots of drivers face these hills on the way to work or school every weekday. As a premier Ithaca body shop, we feel obligated to caution local drivers about taking it easy on those slick roads. Fall weather brings its share of rainfall, often at night. Sometimes fallen snow is blown into the road and create a nuisance for drivers. Untreated snow turns slick as ice, so it’s best to drive a bit slower when you encounter these slick patches – especially on hills.
It’s important to keep an eye out for other drivers while driving on the hills during the early hours. Sometimes a car unexpectedly turns off a side street onto the main road and you have to stop short to avoid hitting it. Being on a hill makes quick maneuvering even more difficult. Add slippery roads to the equation and it sometimes is a recipe for disaster.
The Worst Happens
And then there are times that no matter what you do, you can’t avoid an accident. When it snows and people are in a hurry to get to work or school, accidents can happen out of the blue. This is why it’s important for you to always wear your seat belt on your morning commutes. Another important thing you should always have on hand is Wink’s collision service Ithaca phone number. While we hope you’re never in an accident, if the worst does ever happen, it’s good to have a trusted auto repair service to call just in case.

It’s a fact that each season here in Central New York and New England brings its own hazards to our vehicles. Throughout the succession of the changing environment and temperatures, our vehicles simply have it rough out there in the cruel world.
Many people wonder which situation is worse for our cars and trucks – winter or summer? Both have their intrinsic hazards that can take a serious toll on the exterior of your vehicle along with mechanical issues that will pop up unexpectedly.
Both Seasons Have Equal Power
The extreme heat of the summer, scorching sunlight, weather events and additional traveling brings many people to their Ithaca body shop for repairs. Collision repair in Ithaca can increase in demand due to the extra driving we do, as well as paint and body repairs from weather-related damages.
But is it the worst? Hard to really say. Winter brings its own bagful of woes to car owners that can take a small summer problem and turn it into a bigger issue in the deep cold.
Let’s consider the obvious drop in temperatures that can sink into the negative digits with windchill increasing the effects. The freezing and prolonged temperatures affect many rubber based components in the vehicle, tires obtaining a major impact.
Tires contain a rubber component that certainly reacts to temperature changes. The colder the air, the harder the tires become. The air pressure within the tires also drops when it gets colder out. So now you have hard rubber tires and low air pressure. Perfect combination for loss of traction on slippery roads and snow, as well as the potential for a tire blow out or flat if you are not paying attention.
Wink’s Body Shop in Ithaca sees a lot more vehicles in the winter months due to collisions, weather-related damages, and exterior issues relating to the cold. We strongly advise you to keep your vehicle protected from the elements as much as possible. Be aware of tire pressure and immediately check psi if your warning lights go off.
Another main rubber component is contained in your windshield wipers. Opting to replace the summer wipers with winter ones is a good start. Ice and snow can and will cause damage to wipers along with your windshield cleaning water system. Once the wipers become damaged or torn, they are a significant safety hazard and need to be replaced immediately.
Central NY collision repair also sees a lot of broken windshields due to cracking from the cold and even improper attempts to clean the windshield. Never put hot water on a frozen windshield to speed up the defrosting process. Hot water on a frozen windshield is a recipe for disaster. Give your vehicle time to warm up and use only specifically made de-icers for automobiles.
Last But Not Least
We talk about rust damage and corrosion often, because this is the Number One damage cause to vehicles here in Central New York. Salt and ice melt on the roads are well-known to be highly corrosive. They not only corrode and destroy the roads but take great joy in eating away at your vehicle’s exterior, brake lines, exhaust system, undercarriage and so much more.
Another little known issue is the fact that older vehicles may have small cracks in the metals of the vehicle. With winter weather, you get snow, rain, ice and a mixture of both, along with freezing temperatures. Snow and ice melt when it warms up a bit, then when the temperature drops, freezes up again causing the metal to expand and contract accordingly. The small crack can easily become a large break.
Collision Repair in Ithaca is a Phone Call Away
No matter what damage your vehicle has sustained this winter, or if a small issue is becoming a bigger one, contact us here at Wink’s Body Shop for an appointment. We will be happy to evaluate the situation for you and provide a free estimate of repairs.
Your Ithaca body shop wants to keep you safe this winter and able to continue with your daily driving. Don’t let a small issue become a larger one.
The New Year has arrived and people have made their resolutions for a healthier and happier year. Not many have considered making a resolution to take better care of our vehicles. When you think about how important our cars and trucks are to our every day life, it’s surprising we tend to forget about keeping them maintained.
You probably do the usual mechanical repairs and checks like for tires, oil changes, transmission fluids, coolant and such. But what about the body of your vehicle? Or the under carriage that is constantly exposed to corrosives? Or the paint that has been scratched, dinged or faded? Collision repair in Ithaca is not limited to accident damage to your vehicle. There are many other services available at Wink’s Body Shop!

Although it’s not always necessary to need collision repair in Ithaca, it can be worthwhile to have the body shop inspect your vehicle for any potential issues.
Winter Tips To Safer Driving
The winter months are full of difficulties just waiting to happen. The cold takes a toll on the battery, the windshield wipers, and the fluids in your vehicle that keep it running. Be sure to keep fluid levels up as needed, change out old fluids, replace windshield wipers, keep an eye on them that the ice doesn’t tear off the rubber, and don’t forget the tires.
All-season or summer tires are not the best option for winter driving in our area. Summer tires are certainly basically useless in the snow and on icy roads. All-season are better and can offer some grip but choosing a winter tire is the best and recommended option. The tire pressure should also be paid close attention to.
As the cold temperatures compress the air, so too will it compress the air in your tires. For every 10 degrees Fahrenheit the weather dips, your tires lose one pound per square inch of pressure. According to Car Talk, tire pressure is important for braking, cornering and your car’s overall stability — all things that are important on icy roads. Too much pressure and your tires bounce off the road. Too little pressure and they’ll get worn down and overheat. Check your car’s ideal tire pressure in the owner’s manual. (Courtesy of MNN.com )
We’ve talked many times about the dangers of road salt on our roads and the damage that can result when in contact with your vehicle. We feel this is a significant issue that we continue to remind you of.
Repeated exposure to salt, however, can lead to rust, especially to your vehicle’s undercarriage, which faces the most exposure. The result can be rusted or corroded exhaust systems, mufflers and brake systems, among other parts.
Keeping the underside of your car safe from salt isn’t easy, especially if you’re in an area that frequently uses road salt. AccuWeather has two suggestions. The first is keeping your car clean during the winter months by taking it to car washes that have an under-spray. This reduces the chance for the salty mix to eat away at the car. The second is taking the car to a collision shop before winter begins to have the underside of the car treated with an oil spray that combats the salt.
Road hazards create many to seek Central NY collision repair. Icy roads can cause slipping and sliding. And if you happen to need to react quickly and hit your brakes too hard, you may find you will need the services of your Ithaca body shop. The early snowfalls can surprise many drivers who may still be driving like it were clear sailing. Keep an eye out and appraise your surroundings at all times.
Wink’s Body Shop in Ithaca Reminds You
Take it slow and steady. Be sure your windows are clear of ice and snow. Also, be sure to clear off the roof, hood and back so as to prevent the ice from flying off and causing damage to another driver. Pay attention to road conditions and adjust your driving habits accordingly.

Sprucing Up for the Season
Wink’s Body Shop is locally owned and operated right here in your hometown of Ithaca. We provide many automobile body repairs for everything from collision damage in Ithaca to repainting your car or truck. One of the most requested services is our expert detailing on all makes and models. Although you may do some light detailing on your own, our technicians have the products and professional tools to do a deep cleaning and maintenance care of the interior and exterior.
Getting your car or truck clean and shiny is akin to getting a brand new car. The clean smell, brighter dash and the spotless upholstery can make you fall in love with your vehicle all over again. Additional exterior repairs to paint scratches, dings, dents and even sun damage to the paint are all part of our long list of services.
As your main Ithaca body shop, we want you to know how important it is to keep up with body maintenance. Winter is here and so is the salt and road corrosives used to melt ice and snow. Any scratches on the paint become a magnet for the salt and quickly erodes the metal causing rust to form.
Paint scratches are relatively easy to repair in the early stages requiring a bit of buffing, paint match and sealant. If left too long and rust has set in, the job can become more detailed requiring a deeper removal of existing paint in order to remove all the rust and seal the surfaces.

Professionals, no matter their occupation, must uphold a higher standard in all they do. For instance, if a family member is injured, you take them to a professional doctor or surgeon. If you pet is sick, you take them to a reputable and educated veterinarian.
If your vehicle is in need of collision repair in Ithaca, you will want a certified, experienced and professional technician to work on your car or truck. You don’t want to leave the repairs up to chance and hope for the best. Price is not always the best indicator of the quality of work performed.
Why Certification and Education Matters
The automobile industry – body work and mechanical – is constantly changing and improving in the techniques, materials and education needed to perform repairs safely and correctly. A professional shop and its technicians need to stay up on the forward movement and know the requirements for continuing education for their staff.
In the old days, many jobs and occupations were learned hands-on, on-the-job. People could apprentice with an experienced service person and learn the basics. Then over time, experience, and even failures, they could develop into a reputable and skilled repair technician.
This is not so today. The auto body repair industry (and mechanics as well) is in need of trained technicians. Education is key with many students beginning their automotive career in Vocational courses at the high school level, then they move onto college level courses where they can obtain a degree or a certificate.
Once a promising technician signs on with an auto repair facility, experience is a daily thing. But, again, continuing education sets this young technician apart from the others. Various vehicle manufacturers offer training classes toward certification upgrades, colleges offer advanced courses and parts manufacturers often also provide excellent opportunities for training.
Collision repair in Ithaca should not be a hit or miss experience. Investigate a potential Ithaca body shop and ask questions. Don’t be mislead by pricing. Look at their reputation, reviews, guarantees, customer service and most of all, ask about the technicians’ training and certification.
Held to a Higher Standard
Simply put, no matter the profession, continuing education increases the ability and skills of surgeons, dentists, hair stylists, and yes, auto body technicians. With education comes more knowledge. These people have a higher standard to adhere to because they know the right way to do things and also know that taking short cuts can be a dangerous option.
An auto body repair person must be extremely careful to repair properly, not miss details and guarantee his/her work. Failure to know what needs to be done, failure to use appropriate parts and repair methods, failure to notice a detail could mean a dangerous situation for the customer. Even what seems like a small mistake could lead to an accident. Technicians hold a lot of responsibility in their hands.

Winter is not the only time to be concerned about road condition. Fall can bring about a lot of different driving issues and dangers that take people by surprise. Winks Body Shop, collision repair in Ithaca can fix a myriad of dents, dings, and damage caused by an accident. Being prepared and carrying the proper equipment will give you peace of mind.
When you think of the fall season, images of beautifully decked out trees in their fall colors, crisper air and apple picking pop into mind. Fall is an absolutely beautiful time of year. As the weather changes, leaves drop to the ground, and heavier rains appear out of nowhere, road conditions are constantly changing.
Prepare for the Unexpected
The temperatures can be a bit up and down right now. Road surfaces may be wet, covered in leaves (which makes them slippery), ice can form in areas due to the lower temperatures and rainfall, and potholes begin to appear.
The roads you drove on in summer might change unexpectedly and catch you off guard. It’s important to pay attention and slow down a bit to keep you and your family safe.
As always, carrying the required automobile insurance from a reputable carrier it of utmost importance. Failure to carry insurance is illegal in the State of New York. Be sure to not only carry liability coverage but also comprehensive and collision coverage for your vehicle in case of an accident. Always keep your insurance card in your vehicle with a second copy kept elsewhere for safe keeping.
If you encounter an accident with damage to either your vehicle or the other person’s car, you must report the incident to your local authorities. Having a police report can verify your version of the incident and will be useful to the insurance carrier’s claims adjuster to determine cause and responsibility.
Contact your insurance company or agent (depending on the requirements issued by your carrier) and report the accident immediately. Your carrier’s adjuster will advise you which steps to take next. Most likely you will need to obtain an estimate from a Central NY collision repair facility to present to the insurance company. They may require more than one. Significant damage will need to be viewed and confirmed by the company representative. Be sure you have your car or truck towed to the Ithaca body shop of your preference.

Our Top 5 Safe Driving Tips
Leaves, Rain and Peepers
Falling leaves drift by my window is an old song that brings many fond memories to mind. The colors ranging from yellow, orange, red, maroon dance joyfully on the trees as their colors become more vibrant. But, they fall off the trees and land on the roadways. Between rain being common in the fall, the addition of leaves on the roads can make for a very slippery surface. Do not brake quickly on leaf covered roads, and do lower your speed to accommodate the road condition.
Falling Back into Early Darkness
After the long days of summer, the quickly fading sunset can put us out on roads in much darker times than we’ve become used to. So watch out, again, for fallen leaves, pedestrians, bicycles, other drivers, and animals entering the roadway.
Keep your windshield clean, a good pair of sunglasses and keep a good distance between you and the vehicles in front of you. The sun glare can momentarily blind a driver causing loss of control or an accident. Stay aware of your surroundings and travel at a respectable speed.
Frost on the Pumpkin
Many times your Ithaca body shop hears and sees the damage resulting from unexpected frost or ice on roads and bridges. In the winter, we are more used to there being icy conditions and are generally ready for the hazard. But in the fall, it’s not the primary thing in our mind as we go about our business and continue along at our regular summer season speed.
Remember, bridges and shaded areas can be covered with black ice, making it difficult to see until it’s too late. Slow down and evaluate the condition of the roads. If you can’t see ahead of you due to a curve in the road, slow down.
It’s a Wild and Wooly World
We’re not talking of winter quite yet, but the amount of wild animals that will be out and about. The shorter days have them moving more to find food in the shorter daylight hours. For deer and moose, this is breeding season. Moose, in particular, can be confused and make poor choices near roads.
Central NY collision repair is often necessary when a moose has been encountered on the roadways. A moose is nothing to contend with. Standing significantly taller than most vehicles and weighing over 1000 pounds, the damage that can result from a collision is usually extensive. Nothing can frighten a driver more than coming around a corner to find a huge moose standing motionless in the road. Take it easy, be sure you are using the correct headlight beams and watch carefully.
Every fall, much of New England is visited by people desiring to partake of the gorgeous fall colors. We know them affectionately as Leaf Peepers! Nature does put on a splendid show and we are pleased to share it with everyone.
Of course, like summertime vacations, this means a lot more people on the roads who may be distracted by the sights, or who may suddenly (and without warning) pull off the road to grab that super fantastic photograph.
Be prepared for the unexpected behavior of other vehicles. People will also be traveling slowly, so plan extra time to get where you are going. Let’s be safe out on the roads so we are able to share our ventures with friends and family.
