Our Top 5 Safe Driving Tips
Leaves, Rain and Peepers
Falling leaves drift by my window is an old song that brings many fond memories to mind. The colors ranging from yellow, orange, red, maroon dance joyfully on the trees as their colors become more vibrant. But, they fall off the trees and land on the roadways. Between rain being common in the fall, the addition of leaves on the roads can make for a very slippery surface. Do not brake quickly on leaf covered roads, and do lower your speed to accommodate the road condition.
Falling Back into Early Darkness
After the long days of summer, the quickly fading sunset can put us out on roads in much darker times than we’ve become used to. So watch out, again, for fallen leaves, pedestrians, bicycles, other drivers, and animals entering the roadway.
Keep your windshield clean, a good pair of sunglasses and keep a good distance between you and the vehicles in front of you. The sun glare can momentarily blind a driver causing loss of control or an accident. Stay aware of your surroundings and travel at a respectable speed.
Frost on the Pumpkin
Many times your Ithaca body shop hears and sees the damage resulting from unexpected frost or ice on roads and bridges. In the winter, we are more used to there being icy conditions and are generally ready for the hazard. But in the fall, it’s not the primary thing in our mind as we go about our business and continue along at our regular summer season speed.
Remember, bridges and shaded areas can be covered with black ice, making it difficult to see until it’s too late. Slow down and evaluate the condition of the roads. If you can’t see ahead of you due to a curve in the road, slow down.
It’s a Wild and Wooly World
We’re not talking of winter quite yet, but the amount of wild animals that will be out and about. The shorter days have them moving more to find food in the shorter daylight hours. For deer and moose, this is breeding season. Moose, in particular, can be confused and make poor choices near roads.
Central NY collision repair is often necessary when a moose has been encountered on the roadways. A moose is nothing to contend with. Standing significantly taller than most vehicles and weighing over 1000 pounds, the damage that can result from a collision is usually extensive. Nothing can frighten a driver more than coming around a corner to find a huge moose standing motionless in the road. Take it easy, be sure you are using the correct headlight beams and watch carefully.
Every fall, much of New England is visited by people desiring to partake of the gorgeous fall colors. We know them affectionately as Leaf Peepers! Nature does put on a splendid show and we are pleased to share it with everyone.
Of course, like summertime vacations, this means a lot more people on the roads who may be distracted by the sights, or who may suddenly (and without warning) pull off the road to grab that super fantastic photograph.
Be prepared for the unexpected behavior of other vehicles. People will also be traveling slowly, so plan extra time to get where you are going. Let’s be safe out on the roads so we are able to share our ventures with friends and family.Tags: Central NY collision repair, collision repair in Ithaca, Ithaca Body Shop, Safe driving tips
