ADVANCED DRIVER SYSTEMS

ADAS or Advanced Driver Assist Systems

Almost all newer vehicles have ADAS. These systems started becoming popular in 2016. They are intended to help drivers maintain control of their vehicle while driving and also avoid collisions.

Park Assist systems use multiple sensors in the rear and/or front bumpers to detect objects at slower speeds. Mainly for use in driveways and parking lots to alert the driver when getting close to another object.

Active Cruise Control and Front Collision Avoidance systems use a sensor in the front bumper or grille area to detect objects in front of the vehicle at higher rates of speed. Active Cruise Control systems allow vehicles to maintain speed and distance relative to the vehicle in front of them. Collision Avoidance systems will warn the driver of an imminent front-end collision and a lot of times will brake the vehicle to avoid the collision.

Lane Keep and Departure systems use a camera usually mounted behind the top of the windshield to look for markings on the road. They can recognize the lines on the road and some systems can recognize traffic signs. This system is mainly to help the driver keep the vehicle in the correct lane.

Surround View uses multiple cameras around the vehicle to show the driver an over the top view of their vehicle and objects around it. Cameras are usually mounted in the front grille, side mirrors and rear gate or trunk lid. System only operates at low rates of speed and is intended for maneuvering in parking lots, driveways or other tight spaces.

Blind Spot and Rear Collision Avoidance systems use sensors behind the rear bumper or taillights. There are usually two sensors on the left and right rear corners of the vehicle. Blind spot warns drivers of another vehicle at the rear corners of the vehicle. An indicator in the side mirrors will tell the driver that another vehicle is in their blind spot and the driver should not change lanes. Rear Collision Avoidance systems will warn the driver of an imminent rear-end collision. It will also warn a driver to oncoming cross traffic if driver is backing onto a roadway. This system may apply the brake to avoid the collision.

State of the Art Equipment

Because so many vehicles are equipped with some or all of these systems, we have purchased top rated calibration equipment. We can calibrate almost all ADAS systems on almost any vehicle.

Manufacturers recommend checking and adjusting these systems if there is ever an impact at or near any of the sensors. Since these sensors are mounted all over the vehicle especially near the front and rear bumpers, it doesn't take much to knock a sensor out of alignment. Just a light bump to your bumper probably means the system needs to be checked.

For vehicles with Lane Keep and Departure systems, it is recommended to calibrate the system if a windshield is replaced.

So, if you bring your vehicle to Wink's Body Shop because it has been in a collision, you have peace of mind that we will make sure these systems are working correctly.
